Hwy 1 reopened after collision; hundreds of bottles of wine cleared

Highway 1 is now open westbound about two kilometres west of Hope after two tractor trailers collided head-on.

The closure was due to an accident, but the delay in opening the road was due to a difficult vehicle recovery. The reopening time was delayed several times throughout the night.

Police say a 30-year-old Abbotsford man in a tractor trailer carrying hundreds of bottles of wine was traveling eastbound on Highway 1 when he lost control, crossed the centre lane and hit another tractor trailer being driven by a 57-year-old man from Delta.

No one was hurt in the head-on crash but both trucks sustained extensive damage. The mess from all of the broken bottles and spilled wine took 10 hours to clean up.
